Monthly Music Series: The Perseid String Quartet

Formed in 2013, The Perseid String Quartet is an ensemble of professional musicians, based in Saint Louis, whose mission is to “perform great works for string quartet to the highest possible artistic standards.”

Written at the turn of the 19th century, Beethoven’s Quartet Opus 18 No. 6 is perhaps the most inventive of his early work. The resulting effect is a whirlwind tour through rollicking dances in the first movement, a warm and leisurely Haydn-esque Adagio, and a peasant dance finale that ends with a race to the finish.

Dvorak wrote Op. 51 Quartet in E-flat Major as a Czech national style was beginning to emerge on the European stage. He is considered on of the greatest Czech composers of all time, and his pleasing melodies and tuneful dances are still beloved today.
